Maharaja trailer is out.
Filmmaker Nithilan Saminathan confirmed on Wednesday the release date of his upcoming directorial venture, Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi in the lead role. He announced that the movie will hit screens worldwide on June 14.
The movie's theatrical release is earlier than expected. The filmmakers previously unveiled the trailer without disclosing the release date. Many anticipated the movie not to hit cinemas before July.
Maharaja has been in the making for some time now. Nithilan made his directorial debut with the thriller Kurangu Bommai in 2017 and took his time to craft his second film.
Judging from the trailer, Maharaja seems to revolve around an ordinary man and his thirst for vengeance. In the film, Vijay Sethupathi portrays the titular role. Maharaja runs a small barber shop in a working-class neighbourhood and appears to have no family. When we first meet him, he is reeling under emotional turmoil. Bruised and anxious, Maharaja arrives at the police station to file an FIR, claiming that somebody took 'Lakshmi' away from him. However, when questioned about 'Lakshmi,' Maharaja struggles to provide a basic answer. His disoriented behaviour perplexes everyone, including the police, who are unable to decipher what 'Lakshmi' is—whether it's a person or a thing. Whatever it is, it holds immense significance to Maharaja, and he appears determined to retrieve it.
The trailer hints at an epic confrontation between Vijay Sethupathi's character and Bollywood filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap. While the trailer doesn't divulge much information about Anurag's character, it suggests that he is not a positive presence.
