Finally, the latest Malayalam hit, Varshangalkku Shesham, is set to make its streaming debut soon. SonyLIV has confirmed that the movie will be available for streaming on its platform on June 7.

Starring Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan, Varshangalkku Shesham is one of the rare Malayalam movies that have delayed their streaming debut in favour of an extended theatrical run in recent times. Streaming platforms have become major revenue generators for producers in India, so much so that major players reportedly have a say in when some films should be released in theatres.

In South India, all new movies arrive on streaming within 28 days of their theatrical debut, regardless of their performance at the box office. Some of the biggest blockbusters have also had early digital releases, undercutting their box-office potential in the past. For example, Malayalam star Fahadh Faasil's Aavesham was performing excellently in cinemas when it became available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video less than a month after its initial release.

This dynamic and ongoing trend has become a bone of contention between filmmakers and other stakeholders in the box office business. Earlier this year, a group of theatre owners announced that they would not screen new Malayalam movies with shorter OTT windows in their theatres.

A handful of films, however, have defied the trend and stayed off the streaming platforms for more than four weeks. Varshangalkku Shesham was first released in cinemas on April 11 and is set to debut on streaming after a gap of eight weeks.

Varshangalkku Shesham has garnered positive reviews from critics and struck a chord with audiences. Written and directed by Dhyan Sreenivasan, the film is a period drama about the struggles of two Malayali friends to make it big in movies in Madras (now Chennai). The film also boasts an all-star supporting cast, including Y. G. Mahendran, Shaan Rahman, Neeta Pillai, Aju Varghese, Basil Joseph, and Neeraj Madhav.
