The latest blockbuster Malayalam movie Varshangalkku Shesham made its much-awaited streaming debut on Thursday. Starring Vineeth Sreenivasan and Nivin Pauly in the lead roles, the film is now available for streaming on SonyLIV.

Varshangalkku Shesham is one of those rare Malayalam movies in recent times to have opted for a delayed release on an OTT platform. It has become a norm of sorts for all South Indian movies to arrive on streaming within four weeks of their theatrical debut. Stakeholders in the Malayalam film industry, such as exhibitors and distributors, are already protesting against this prevailing trend, which is believed to be adversely changing the idea of the cinema-going experience among their patrons.

As box office revenue remains unpredictable, streaming deals provide a safety net to producers, prompting them to make profitable pre-release deals with the streaming platforms. This has become a contentious topic across the South Indian film industry.

In the meantime, a handful of filmmakers keep their new films out of the streaming platforms even when their films are no longer in demand at the box office. Varshangalkku Shesham is one such movie that has maintained the ideal 8-week gap between its theatrical release and OTT debut.

Vineeth Sreenivasan wrote and directed Varshangalkku Shesham for producer Visakh Subramaniam's banner Merryland Cinemas. It's Vineeth's second movie for the same production house after his 2022 hit Hridayam. Similar to his previous directorial outing, Vineeth seems to have delivered a feel-good, nostalgia-filled movie, which is an ode to the medium of cinema.

Set against the backdrop of 1970s Madras (now Chennai), Varshangalkku Shesham follows two ambitious youngsters, played by Pranav Mohanlal and Dhyan Sreenivasan, who aspire to make it big in movies. The film was a big critical and commercial hit. According to reports, the movie earned more than Rs 80 crore in ticket sales, making it one of the highest-grossing Malayalam movies of 2024.
