SonyLIV on Wednesday confirmed the digital premiere date for the latest Malayalam action drama, Turbo. The movie, which stars Malayalam superstar Mammootty in the lead role, will make its streaming debut on August 9.

Unlike most new South movies, the star-driven movies in Malayalam are delaying their arrival on streaming to revitalize the business of cinemas in Kerala. Turbo opened in cinemas on May 23, and the streaming audiences had to wait more than 11 weeks to watch the movie from the comforts of their homes.

Besides playing the lead role, Mammootty has also bankrolled the action movie under his own production banner, Mammootty Kampany. The film is helmed by Vysakh, from a screenplay penned by Midhun Manuel Thomas.

Vysakh is known for making mindless entertainers purely to appeal to the sensibilities of the mass audience. Turbo also marked Mammootty's slight deviation from doing performance and theme-heavy movies. Mammootty's last few movies were experimental and inventive on so many levels, setting a new benchmark in Malayalam cinema when it comes to cinematic brilliance.

However, Turbo is a far cry from such attempts. The film tells the story of a village thug, who is notorious for wreaking havoc. He gets entangled in an issue way above his pay. Now, he has to use all his skills and street smart to save his loved ones from a nefarious villain.

"The narrative unnecessarily wastes too much time unnecessarily building up Jose as a franchisable character. The jokes are not funny enough, the fight sequences lack oomph, and the whole narrative feels stale. You know a movie is a dud when its screenplay fails to utilize the talents of some of the country's best actors. Just like the hero in Turbo, Mammootty can't always save his loved ones (read the director and writer) from a mess," read Desimartini's one-star review
