Malayalam superstar Mammootty's latest movie Turbo has taken a solid start at the global box office, particularly in Kerala. The movie's opening day gross is considered to be the fourth highest at the Kerala box office.
According to reports, Turbo earned more than Rs 6.15 crore in Kerala alone on Thursday, which is the second-biggest opening in Mammootty's career after Bheeshma Parvam. It is the biggest opening for a Malayalam movie in 2024.
Turbo enjoyed significant hype before its release, paving the way for a strong opening. The filmmakers also gave the film a massive theatrical launch worldwide to capitalize on the interests of movie buffs. For example, the film was released on more than 700 screens in overseas markets alone.
Besides Kerala, Turbo is expected to perform well in international territories. At the moment, we don't have its actual opening day earnings in overseas markets.
Going by the early trends, Turbo is also poised to perform well on Friday, with the pre-sales report exceeding Rs 1.2 crore. If the film continues its bullish trend, it might cross the Rs 50 crore mark at the global box office by the end of its opening weekend.
Turbo, however, has received mixed reviews from critics. "The narrative unnecessarily wastes too much time building up Jose as a franchisable character. The jokes are not funny enough, the fight sequences lack oomph, and the whole narrative feels stale. You know a movie is a dud when its screenplay fails to utilize the talents of some of the country's best actors," wrote Manoj Kumar R for Desimartini.
Yet, Turbo seems to have struck a chord with Mammootty's core fan base and created a positive buzz on social media. Directed by Vysakh, the film also stars Raj B. Shetty and Anjana Jayaprakash in the lead roles.
