Trolls hound Naseeruddin Shah for calling Mughals 'refugees' who wanted to make India their homeland
Naseeruddin Shah has landed in trouble for calling Mughals 'refugees' in a recent interview.
The chapter of the Mughal in history has been a highly debated one this year. As we close the book on 2021, actor Naseeruddin Shah seems to have caused a stir on social media for referring to the Mughals as refugees in a recent interview.
The veteran Bollywood star while speaking to The Wire spoke about the contribution of the Mughal’s legacy to the country in terms of culture, architecture and more and said that the Mughals rulers wanted to make India their homeland.
Naseeruddin Shah’s clip from the interview has now gone viral and the actor is being trolled heavily on Twitter for his views. Apart from jokes and memes on his use of the word ‘refugee’ for Mughals, several others reacted strongly to Naseeruddin Shah’s statement about Mughals giving the whole matter a political twist and a controversial tinge.
In the interview clip going around Naseeruddin Shah can be heard saying, “"The so-called atrocities of the Mughals are being highlighted all the time. We forget that the Mughals are people who have contributed to the country. They are people who have left lasting monuments in the country, who have left the tradition of dancing, music, painting, literature. Mughals came here to make this their homeland. You can call them refugees if you like.”
The actor has often invited trouble while sharing his political outlook but despite the backlash he has never been deterred from speaking his mind whenever asked to share his views.
In Bollywood too, the actor has courted controversy over calling actor Rajesh Khanna a ‘poor actor’ or claiming that Dilip Kumar didn’t do enough for Hindi cinemas. He also infamously once called actor Anupam Kher a clown for his political views.
