Post the failure of Indian 2, Vikram was recently asked about the current situation of box office numbers affecting Tamil cinema.

Tamil cinema had a mixed bag of films released this year. While Malayalam cinema dominated with multiple blockbusters and critically acclaimed films, the big releases in Kollywood failed to make a significant impact at the box office. Following the disastrous performance of Kamal Haasan and S. Shankar’s latest vigilante drama, Indian 2, the Kollywood box office hit rock bottom, with many insiders pointing out the lack of content-rich films in Tamil cinema this year. Despite Thangalaan making around Rs 98 crore in two weeks, leading star Vikram shared his thoughts on the current box office struggles in Kollywood.

Vikram expressed that the situation is essentially the same everywhere. He mentioned that if they believe in certain content and it doesn't do well, they need to reflect on what happened and why it was done that way. “If we believe in some content and it doesn’t do well, we have to think about what happened and why it was done that way. It’s the same everywhere and doesn’t have any sort of difference, whether in the North or South, it’s common,” he said.

He also shared that Parvathy, Pa. Ranjith, and he are so deeply involved in their work that they hardly have time for family and friends. He explained that their focus is primarily on their projects, and they avoid discussions on other matters, especially since their film's release was approaching. He said, “I don’t even think we got into that space for a discussion, and it was sort of close to our release as well. Generally, we are more involved in what we are going to do to make our film reach better places.”

    Thangalaan

Meanwhile, Vikram’s latest drama, Thangalaan, has been performing relatively well at the box office, recently minting close to Rs 100 crore. The film collected over Rs 98 crore and is expected to earn more after its Hindi release, scheduled for September 6, 2024.

Thangalaan, starring Vikram, Malavika Mohanan, and Parvathy, revolves around the exploitation of tribal communities in the Kolar Gold Mines during the British era. The makers have also announced a sequel to Thangalaan, which is expected to begin production next year.
