Thalapathy Vijay's "Ghilli" continues to solidify its box office gains despite challenges from new releases. The film, which is 20 years old, has achieved the distinction of becoming the biggest success story in the history of re-releases.
"Ghilli," which was re-released in cinemas last month to mark its 20th anniversary, is showing no signs of slowing down. So much so that it is performing better than most new arrivals at the box office in Tamil Nadu.
According to reports, "Ghilli" has breached the mark of Rs 30 crore from its theatrical collection. "@Actorvijay - @trishtrashers 's #Ghilli (2004) re-release breaks into a remarkable ₹30 crore gross club Globally in 2 Weeks. The film is already the 'Biggest Re-release' that India has ever seen in this Century & continues to breach new milestones!," tweeted Cinetrak.
"Ghilli" has shattered the collection records of "Avatar" and "Sholay." While "Avatar" was re-released in cinemas in India in 2012 and earned Rs 18 crore, "Sholay" collected Rs 13 crore following its release in 3D in 2013. "Ghilli" has set a new record while giving new movies a run for their money.
"Ghilli" is already among the top five grossers at the Tamil Nadu box office so far. The film has also overshadowed the latest Tamil movie "Rantham," starring Vishal. Written and directed by Hari, the revenge drama is struggling to draw audiences against the enduring popularity of "Ghilli."
Earlier this week, Ajith Kumar's two past blockbusters were also released in cinemas. On the occasion of Ajith's 53rd birthday, his career-defining movies "Dheena" and "Billa" were released to a rousing reception from fans. According to reports, both films earned a combined total of Rs 1.2 crore on their opening day.
