Not for nothing they say nothing dies on the internet. Actor-filmmaker Prithviraj Sukumaran's old comments have now resurfaced from the depths of cyberspace, going viral on social media and sparking heated arguments among fans.
Prithviraj has been known for his outspokenness from the very beginning of his career. Even though it created problems for him, he never hesitated to speak his mind. Similarly, back in the day, he seemed to have an axe to grind against the movies starring Thalapathy Vijay and Telugu superstar Allu Arjun.
In an old interview, he expressed his anguish about the movies of Vijay and Allu Arjun enjoying a fan following on par with Malayalam stars in Kerala. He claimed that he didn't like their movies and urged movie buffs in Kerala to not encourage movies with no artistic sense by watching them in large numbers.
"Today everyone is praising Subramaniapuram. But, the same people also watch Vijay and Allu Arjun movies. Let me say frankly, their films have very poor aesthetics and don't have any elements of a good story or good cinema. But, distributors in Kerala buy these movies for Rs 4 crore. It's because we give them the courage that if movies have plenty of songs and dance, we will watch them. We should change that," Prithviraj had said.
The short clip from the interview is garnering a lot of reactions from fans of all-stars. Some even pointed out that Prithviraj distributed Vijay's 2019 sports drama, Bigil, in Kerala.
Vijay and Allu Arjun have a strong fanbase in Kerala. Most of their movies open bigger than movies featuring Mohanlal and Mammootty. Competing with their films in Kerala has been very challenging for members of the Malayalam film fraternity, including Prithviraj.
However, Prithviraj's idea of good cinema has evolved since then, which is clearly evident in the kind of movies he chooses. While he continues to champion purely artistic attempts like Aadujeevitham, he has also shown great willingness to be part of movies with plenty of dance and song numbers.
