Sushmita Sen made India proud when she was crowned Miss Universe in 1994. That crowning moment led Sushmita to have a good career in Bollywood, making her one of the leading actresses of the 90s. Marking the 30th anniversary of her Miss Universe win on Tuesday (May 21), the actress penned a heartfelt note expressing gratitude to India and her fans for being her strength.

Taking to Instagram, Sushmita Sen shared a picture of herself with a little girl. In the picture, the actress is wearing a minimal white saree, glossy brown lips, and shimmery eyeshadow, and topped her outfit with the ‘Miss Universe’ sachet.

The caption of the picture read, ““This little girl, who I met in an orphanage, taught an 18 yr old me, life’s most innocent yet profound lessons, ones that I live by to this day” This captured moment is 30 yrs old today as is India’s first ever Victory at Miss Universe!!! IN What a journey it’s been & continues to be….”

Expressing gratitude to her country, Sushmita said, “Thank you India for always being my greatest identity & strength!!” The Miss Universe pageant took place in the Philippines that year and hence, the actress enjoys undying love and support from there, even today. Showering the Philippines with love, Sushmita said, “Thank you Philippines for the unending love & belonging…Three decades & counting!! #mahalkita”

Sushmita also thanked her fans and friends for making a difference in her life.
