Suriya confirms Kanguva release date, set for clash with Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan. Double trouble for Tamil cinema?

The stakeholders in the box office business may not be happy with big movies like Rajinikanth's Vettaiyan and Suriya's Kanguva coming out on the same day.

Tamil superstar Suriya finally put an end to all the speculations by confirming that his most-awaited movie, Kanguva, will hit the screens on October 10, closer to the Deepavali holiday. He unveiled a new poster of his character, Kanguva, standing on top of a mountain made of corpses.

Kanguva will open in cinemas worldwide on October 10. The film will be released in all major Indian languages, and the filmmakers are also in the process of dubbing it in multiple foreign languages. This is one of the biggest movies in Tamil cinema set to hit the screens in 2024. However, it is also set to clash with another major release, Vettaiyan.

Starring superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role, the release date for Vettaiyan was confirmed much before Kanguva. Written and directed by TJ Gnanavel, the film stars Rajinikanth as a top cop. It also boasts a huge supporting cast, including Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati, and Manju Warrier, among others.

Are stakeholders in Tamil cinema happy?

The Tamil film industry went through a rough patch in the last six months with no big releases in theatres. It is touted to be one of the worst dry spells, as theatres in the state relied on the nostalgic factor of past blockbusters and the mercy of Malayalam cinema to draw audiences.

The film trade in Tamil Nadu was hoping to turn things around in the next six months with a slew of most-awaited movies gearing up for release. However, the stakeholders in the box office business may not be happy with big movies like Vettaiyan and Kanguva coming out on the same day.

First, the theatres will have to make a hard choice between Vettaiyan and Kanguva, and so will the audience. There will be challenges in allotting screens and shows. It's only the beginning of problems accommodating such massive movies on non-holiday release dates.

It remains to be seen how the film trade will respond to this box office clash.
