Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj on Tuesday unveiled a new promo to mark the birthday celebration of Tamil star Suriya, who is playing the lead role in his upcoming directorial, temporarily titled Suriya44.

The promo teases a typical Karthik Subbaraj movie, an ode to the magic of cinema from a bygone era. Subbaraj has always been fascinated by the idea of cinema that once ruled the hearts and minds of movie-goers, a concept now eroding in a radically evolved, highly saturated media landscape.

As suspected earlier, Suriya44 seems to be a period drama. The promo begins with the description, "Somewhere in the sea...". Later, it says that "a love, laughter, and war awaited THE ONE...!" Composer Santhosh Narayanan's retro-inspired background score paints an image of a larger-than-life hero as Suriya walks into focus in style, stained with the blood of his enemies. With a loyal personal army at his side, the hero seems ready for war. The promo ends with Suriya's image turning into a retro-looking movie poster, with Narayanan's beats promising a thrilling cinematic ride.

Suriya44 is the maiden collaboration between Suriya and director Karthik Subbaraj, causing a lot of excitement among fans of both the star and the director. While Subbaraj may use a typical commercial format to tell his stories, his movies are not mindless popcorn entertainers. He finds a fine balance between art and commerce, creating a niche for himself in the Tamil film industry.

At the moment, we know very little about the movie's plot or Suriya's character. Actor Pooja Hegde is playing the female lead, while Suriya44 also stars Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, and Sujith Shankar among others.
