As per the prevailing trend, Star made its OTT debut within four weeks of its theatrical launch. The movie was first released in cinemas on May 10 and garnered mixed reactions. However, the film is said to have performed well at the box office.
Star caught the imagination of movie buffs soon after the filmmakers released the trailer. Director Elan cut the trailer, showing the best bits and featuring some intense performances from Kavin. The promo depicted the different phases in the hero's life and his struggle against daunting odds.
Star tells the story of Kalai, played by Kavin. Kalai hails from a working-class background but dreams of making it big in the Tamil film industry. His dreams are supported by his father, while his mother constantly pressures him to get a job. Kalai seems to have enjoyed a lot of fame and popularity within the safety of his college. However, when he steps into the real world, the reality is very different. The cut-throat competition, fewer opportunities, and his personal social status all come in the way of his dream. Kalai finally seems to realize that dreams are not easy to achieve. It takes perseverance and uncompromising grit in the face of constant insults and failures.
Elan revealed that Star was inspired by the struggles of his father, Pandian. He noted that his father's dreams of making it big as an actor were never fulfilled, and he ended up making a living as a still photographer. While the film received mixed reactions, Kavin garnered unanimous praise for his performance. The movie also stars Lal, Aaditi Pohankar, Preity Mukhundhan, and Geetha Kailasam.
