Karan Johar clocked 25 years in the film industry this year and the success of his recent directorial venture with Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (RRKPK) made 2023 even more special for him. Almost all the directorials of the ace filmmaker, who made his debut with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai back in 1998, have featured Shah Rukh Khan in some manner. Whether it’s in a special appearance or in the capacity of a producer – Shah Rukh has been nothing short of a lucky mascot for KJo. Student of the Year was the only film where SRK didn’t have a cameo until RRKPK happened.
So when RRKPK didn’t have a cameo appearance by Shah Rukh, quite a lot of fans were left disheartened. One wonders if the filmmaker ever considered having a special appearance of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in RRKPK as well and if he did, why didn’t he go ahead with the same? During his recent interaction with Pinkvilla, Johar was quizzed about it and he revealed that his assistant directors did make the same suggestion.
Sharing more details, Johar said that his team of ADs had suggested that they should include a moment of Shah Rukh and Kajol singing Tum Kya Mile. “The best moment should be that I track away from Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh and go to Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, singing the same song,” explained the director and added that the idea was to have Ranveer and Alia look at them only for Alia’s Rani to realise that she’s actually in love with Rocky, as SRK and Kajol represent love themselves.
Laughing it off, Johar added that he realised, “With what kind of guts do I have to ask Shah Rukh to not only do a cameo but to come to Kashmir!” Explaining why he didn’t go ahead with the idea, he shared that Shah Rukh never says ‘No’ to him and reminisced about the time when they’d asked him to do the extended special appearance in Brahmastra and SRK had agreed in the blink of an eye, saying, “It’s Karan, no? I can never say No,” and so it won’t be fair for him to take that feeling, of being so empowered, for granted.
Johar further shared that he knew that only Shah Rukh could say, “Ek tarfa pyaar ki taaqat hi kuch aur hoti hai” in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil so he’d asked him to do it and Shah Rukh obliged. Then again, KJo asked him to do a part in Brahmastra, for which SRK shot for 12-14 days and didn’t charge a penny. So when it came to RRKPK, Johar decided to let it pass. “I have to pick and choose my favours. Hence this one (RRKPK), I let it go as I felt embarrassed to ask,” said the director.
Karan concluded by saying that King Khan has a “king-sized heart” as well, as he shot for Brahmastra for almost two weeks with a lot of love and energy, without charging anything. Recently, SRK, KJo and Rani Mukerji were also spotted visiting a theatre post the special fan screening of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai to mark 25 years of its release.
