The day before the 2024 Oscars, Robert Downey Jr. found himself grappling with a significant decision—not about whom to thank in a potential acceptance speech, but rather, a real executive call with his wife Susan. The dilemma? Deciding which parent would accompany their son Exton, 12, to Little League, and who would be there to cheer on daughter Avri, 9, at her softball game.
In the end, Downey rooted for Exton, and Susan, who's also Downey's producing partner at their company, Team Downey, supported Avri.

Downey's Winning Moment
The next day, it was Downey who knocked it out of the park. Not only did he win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Oppenheimer, but he also delivered one of the most entertaining speeches of the night. With a touch of humor, he quipped, “I’d like to thank my terrible childhood and the Academy, in that order,” eliciting laughter from the audience.
He then expressed his gratitude to his family, which includes his three children and wife Susan. They first met while working on the 2003 thriller Gothika, which she produced. Downey credits their happy home life, built over the past two decades, for grounding him.
Downey's Parenting Approach
Susan mentioned that they all appreciate the actor's playful nature. Regardless of the hobbies Exton and Avri pursue, Downey fully engages and genuinely cares about their interests. He's always willing to indulge them. She continued to explain that the couple had successfully created an engaging environment for their children to grow up in.
At the Oscars, Christopher Nolan's biopic Oppenheimer stole the spotlight, winning 7 out of 13 nominations, including Best Actor, Best Director, and Best Picture. The film's popularity is believed to be a significant factor in this year's broadcast seeing a 4% increase in viewership.
Downey will next be seen in the HBO series The Sympathizer, an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Viet Thanh Nguyen. The series is set to premiere on April 14, 2024.
