Actor Ranbir Kapoor has been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on Friday (October 6, 2023) in connection to the Mahadev online betting app case. The actor promoted the online app and allegedly received compensation in return for endorsing and getting involved in promotional endeavours. The case is related to the money laundering probe against the app founders Sourabh Chandraka and Ravi Uppal.
Besides Ranbir, some other personalities from the film industry including Tiger Shroff, Sunny Leone, and Neha Kakkar among others are under the agency’s scanner. It is being reported that these celebrities attended Sourabh’s wedding in Dubai. At least 100 influencers have also been investigated as part of the ongoing probe during which the agency has seized Rs 417 crore worth of proceeds of crime.
According to ED, the Mahadev app is part of an umbrella syndicate arranging online platforms for illegal betting websites to launder money through benami transactions. It also claimed that the promoters ran more such apps, which have been raking in profits of Rs 200 crore on a daily basis.
On the professional front, Ranbir has grabbed headlines for his transformation in his upcoming gangster film, Animal. In the recently released teaser, the makers gave a glimpse of Ranbir’s character who has a troubled relationship with his father portrayed by Anil Kapoor. Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film also has Rashmika Mandanna and Bobby Deol in pivotal roles. Backed by Bhushan Kumar and Murad Khetani, the film is set to arrive in theatres on December 1, 2023.
Apart from Animal, Ranbir will reportedly be seen in the role of Lord Ram in Nitesh Tiwari’s Ramayana. Sai Pallavi will be seen as Sita Ma while Yash will play the ten-headed Ravana. Reportedly, the first part of the trilogy film will go on the floor in February 2024.
