Actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah turned 56 on Saturday. He is now awaiting the release of several highly anticipated films, including Raayan. After working on Raayan, Suryah seems to be in awe of Dhanush's directing and writing talent more than the latter's acting skills.

Suryah heaps praises on Dhanush's storytelling abilities and recalled how he managed to whip up an intense action drama with a lot of emotional moments. "Can you manage to include all the high points of the Ramayana and Mahabharata in a single movie? It's very tough, but as a screenplay writer, he (Dhanush) has done it," claimed Suryah.

Suryah noted that even though Dhanush has written and directed Raayan besides playing the lead role, he has created an equal space for all actors to shine in the 2-hour 20-minute film. He admired Dhanush's commitment to the craft of filmmaking. "From set work to lighting to costume to hairstyle, Dhanush gets involved in every aspect of filmmaking," he added.

Suryah is known for his over-the-top acting; it's one of his unique features as an actor. His scene-chewing often favours the movie, as he manages to even work a lousy scene with his infectious energy. But in Raayan, Dhanush wanted him to underplay his character. "I am a wolf of Rayapuram Street in Raayan. My character won't fight his enemies directly but uses cunning ways to defeat them. His (Dhanush's) character is primed and ready to launch an attack at any time. And you have siblings and their emotional bondings; there are so many characters in this story. In a raw and rustic setting, Dhanush has extracted a world-class performance from actors," said Suryah.

Raayan is bankrolled by Sun Pictures and boasts an all-star supporting cast. Besides Dhanush and Suryah, the film also stars Prakash Raj, Selvaraghavan, Sundeep Kishan, Kalidas Jayaram, and Dushara Vijayan, among others.
