The latest Tamil film, Raayan, is off to a great start at the global box office. The film opened to positive reviews and strong word of mouth, which helped consolidate its earnings during evening and night shows.

According to reports, Raayan earned more than Rs 19 crore from its ticket sales globally, with more than Rs 8 crore coming from Tamil Nadu alone. This is twice what Dhanush's period drama Captain Miller earned on its opening day. Despite its release coinciding with a holiday, Captain Miller couldn't draw audiences to theatres as it garnered mixed reviews, resulting in a lukewarm response from movie patrons.

However, Raayan has received mostly positive reviews, and Dhanush seems to have delivered a wholesome movie that could satisfy both critics and common audiences.

Raayan fell short of beating the opening day collection of Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's Indian 2. Written and directed by Shankar, Indian 2 earned over Rs 9 crore in Tamil Nadu. However, the movie could not hold the interest of audiences beyond its opening weekend owing to overwhelmingly poor reviews.

Raayan seems to have long legs, and it might help him become one of the biggest earners in Dhanush's career. The film is poised to capitalize on the favourable reviews during the weekends and post strong numbers by the end of its first opening weekend. With no major competition at the box office until August 15, Raayan is likely to remain the top choice among movie-goers, especially in Tamil Nadu and, to some extent, in the Telugu states.

Raayan is Dhanush's 50th movie, and he has written and directed it, besides playing the lead role. The film revolves around four siblings and the changing power dynamics among them.
