Pedro Pascal & Ethan Hawke Rekindle Old Flames in Almodóvar's Unique Western 'Strange Way of Life'

Pedro Almodóvar, Spain's preeminent cinematic maestro, finally succumbs to his long-standing affection for the Western genre, crafting an English-language short film that is anything but typical. In his latest venture, 'Strange Way of Life,' Almodóvar unites Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, taking them on an unexpected journey of passion and heartbreak.

Pedro Pascal and Ethan Hawke's Passionate Reunion

In this 31-minute cinematic nugget, Hawke and Pascal portray former lovers Jake and Silva, respectively, who reconnect after a 25-year hiatus. Previously an inseparable duo with dreams of shared sunsets and a ranch, they've since walked separate paths. Their unexpected reunion ignites old sparks, leading to an intimate night of rekindled passion. The film presents their delicate dance of love, heartbreak, and longing with an undeniably Almodóvar twist, deviating from the conventional Western genre.

A 'Strange Way of Life' Beyond The Sunset

However, come morning, Jake's demeanor shifts as he must pursue his duty as Sheriff, setting out to track down a wanted murderer believed to be Silva's son, Joe (played by George Steane). The unexpected visitor heightens tensions, presenting a classic conflict with an emotional twist. The film hints at past desires while exposing the divide that drove them apart, a crucial element in understanding their shared past.

    Pedro Pascal's Compelling Performance

Portraying Silva, Pedro Pascal brings a warm and open demeanor to the screen, counteracting Hawke's cool and steely Sheriff Jake. Despite their differences, they portray a profound chemistry that resonates long after the credits roll. The film's dialogue-driven narrative is supplemented by their superb performances, ensuring every glance and gesture conveys decades of shared history and feelings.

    A Nod To The Classics

In addition to Hawke and Pascal's performances, 'Strange Way of Life' features a few signature Almodóvar twists. A trio of El Dorado-inspired prostitutes, a singer voiced by Caetano Veloso, and a homage to James Stewart in Anthony Mann’s 'Bend of the River' all add to the film’s unique charm. Alberto Iglesias’s soothing musical score and the film's production design and costumes further enhance the nostalgic ambiance.
