The Padma Awards 2024 was announced by the government of India on Thursday (January 25). It marks the second-highest civilian honours after the Bharat Ratna. This year, legendary names like Chiranjeevi, Mithun Chakraborty, Vyjanthimala, and Usha Uthup were some of the names that were conferred with the awards.
Mithun Chakraborty is touted to be one of the most legendary names in Hindi and Bengali cinema. He is also the pioneer of disco dancing in Indian cinema. The 73-year-old actor is known for movies like Disco Dancer, Prem Pratigyaa, Dalaal, Agneepath, Ghar Ek Mandir, Jallad and Pyaar Jhukta Nahin. Actor-politician Chiranjeevi is known for his glorious contribution to Indian cinema with more than 160 movies. He was also the recipient of the Padma Bhushan Award in 2006. The legendary actor entered politics after taking a hiatus from movies in 2007. He founded the Praja Rajyam Party in 2008. But he soon returned to movies in the year 2017. The actor will be seen in the movie Vishwambhara which will be helmed by Vassishta.
Apart from this, Vyjanthimala is a legendary actress-dancer who has been part of some critically acclaimed movies like Devdas, Naya Daur, Aasha, Sadhna, Gunga Jumna, Madhumati, Sangam and Jewel Thief. She has also been the recipient of the Padma Shri award. Her last movie was the 1970 film Ganwaar.
Late Tamil actor and politician Vijayakanth has been posthumously felicitated with the award. He passed away last year in December and his demise was a huge loss for the Indian film and political fraternity. He was known for movies like Vaidehi Kathirunthal, Amman Kovil Kizhakale, Poonthotta Kaavalkaaran, Chinna Gounder, and Honest Raj. Usha Uthup was known for inculcating the foundation of jazz music in Indian cinema with her powerful vocals and unique style of singing. Desimartini extends its heartiest wishes to all the winners of the prestigious award.
