Abhimanyu Dassani and Shilpa Shetty ’s film Nikamma hit the theatres on June 17. The movie was touted to be an all-an-all masala entertainer but saw an extremely poor opening at the box office. While one expected the film to pick up some pace after its first weekend, it also failed miserably in that aspect.
Nikamma has not even managed to earn Rs 2 crore after its first weekend and seems to have a sure-shot ‘disaster’ written all over it. Earlier, the Abhimanyu Dassani starrer had minted only Rs 1.02 crore in totality after its second day. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh had earlier tweeted that the movie had got a decent push at the mass centers but is remaining weak at the metros. However, this was still not enough to push the performance of the movie at the box office.
The Shilpa Shetty film had witnessed an opening of Rs 51 lakh at the box office. On its second day, Nikamma only minted Rs 70 lakh more. The film opened up to negative reviews from the critics and fans alike so negative word-of-mouth is also being touted as a major reason for the movie to fail so badly at the box office.
Nikamma has now joined the league of many Bollywood movie duds at the box office. Some of these other films include Dhaakad, Jersey , Runway 34, Heropanti 2, and Samrat Prithviraj . The movie has been helmed by Sabbir Khan and also stars Shirley Setia, Abhimanyu Singh, and Samir Soni in pivotal roles. It is a Hindi remake of the Telugu film, Middle Class Abbayi that starred Nani, Sai Pallavi, and Bhumika Chawla in the lead roles.
Desimartini’s review for Nikamma read, “Nikamma severely suffers in all aspects. If the loud, over-the-top, and cringe introduction and character development of the lead protagonist were not enough, the movie massively falters in the inculcation of even the most basic common sense and logic in all of its subplots. Be it Abhimanyu Dassani’s Adi explaining to the baddies why he won’t burn due to the LPG gas leakage or Shilpa Shetty’s Avni suddenly turning out to be a cop, in the end, you just find the chain of events and the dialogues bizarre and exasperating.”
