Malayalam superstar Mohanlal recently celebrated his 64th birthday. While hosting his television show, Bigg Boss Malayalam season 6, Mohanlal answered a few questions about his acting career. His response to a question about his 2014 movie Jilla is going viral on social media.
Mohanlal revealed an unknown fact about the Tamil blockbuster and how he came to collaborate with Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay. It seems that Vijay's personal effort ensured Mohanlal's involvement in the movie.
"Some credit also goes to Vijay. He called me personally and asked me if I would do this role in the film. I said I would definitely do it. It is fortunate for an actor when people imagine him in different characters. But, once we get that role, the rest depends on our efforts," he said.
Jilla is one of Mohanlal's most memorable outings in Tamil cinema after director Mani Ratnam's cult classic Iruvar. In Iruvar (1997), he essayed the lead role, loosely based on former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MG Ramachandran. In Jilla, Mohanlal played the highly commercialised role of a cold-blooded gangster.
In Jilla, Mohanlal played the role of foster father to Vijay's Shakthi Sivan. The duo's onscreen chemistry was a big hit among fans in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Shakthi, a devoted son, becomes a nightmare to Mohanlal's Sivan following a few twists and turns, setting the stage for an epic father-son clash. The film, written and directed by R. T. Neason, was a huge hit at the box office in 2014.
On the career front, Mohanlal is now busy shooting for L2: Empuraan, a sequel to his 2019 blockbuster Lucifer. Written by Murali Gopy and directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the filmmakers recently unveiled Mohanlal's ultra-stylish look to coincide with his birthday celebration.
