Mammootty stars in director Gautham Menon's next.
Malayalam superstar Mammootty's next project went on the floors on Wednesday. Besides playing the lead role, Mammootty will be bankrolling the project under his home banner, Mammootty Kampany. The movie will be directed by Gautham Menon.
The untitled project marks the maiden collaboration between Mammootty and Gautham in the capacity of actor-director, and it has created quite an excitement among movie buffs. Gautham's career is going through a rough patch as his recent directorial outings have failed to impress both critics and audiences. Gautham revealed that he was experiencing the worst creative block and was unable to write something worth making.
It's not clear yet whether Gautham has written the screenplay for the Mammootty starrer or has roped in other writers to help him. However, it's noteworthy that the movies produced by Mammootty Kampany have so far never failed to deliver.
All movies bankrolled by Mammootty Kampany, including Kaathal – The Core, Rorschach, Kannur Squad, and the recent commercial entertainer Turbo, have achieved significant success in terms of critical acclaim and box office returns. The company is fast gaining a reputation for making modern classics, which gives Gautham's directorial debut in Malayalam a compelling edge.
While Gautham's directorial career has experienced some turbulence, his acting career has taken off. Gautham has become one of the most sought-after supporting actors, not just in Tamil, but also in Malayalam cinema.
Gautham has shared screen space with Mammootty in the upcoming movie, Bazooka.
On the other hand, Mammootty is enjoying a rewarding period as an actor and producer. He has had two solo releases this year so far, Bramayugam and Turbo. Bramayugam was celebrated as a modern classic in the horror genre and also struck gold at the box office. Turbo opened to mixed reviews but managed to succeed commercially.
