Reacting to the positive responses he has been getting for his debut film, Junaid said that he has miles to go and lots to improve upon.

“I cannot explain in words what I’m feeling right now. Maharaj has been a long and wild journey for me, but all’s well that ends well I guess. Maharaj was made with a lot of love and respect and passion and I’m glad that the film and my performance is striking a chord with audience at large. I just hope I get a cast and crew as supportive in all my future work,” added the actor in his statement.

    Maharaj case

Junaid’s debut film received a lot of backlash from a section of the audience as they believed that the film tried to portray the Hindu religious leaders in a negative light, and demanded a stay on the release of the film which was originally set to release on June 14. However, the Gujarat High Court later allowed Netflix to release the film and Maharaj made its world premiere on June 21.

The makers of Maharaj, Yash Raj Films, refrained from releasing any trailer or poster images of the film and opted for a low-key approach. Maharaj is set in pre-Independence India with journalist Karsandas Mulji battling the religious dogmas of the time.

Based on Saurabh Shah’s book, the film follows the events leading up to the infamous Libel Maharaj libel Case where Jadunath Maharaj accused Karsandas of defamation for writing an article about him in his newspaper Satya Prakash.
