Filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj is now preparing for his next directorial outing with Tamil superstar Suriya, tentatively titled Suriya 44. He has worked with almost all A-listers in the Tamil film industry, barring a few like Thalapathy Vijay and Ajith Kumar.

Speculations were rife about Karthik being the frontrunner to helm Vijay's next movie, Thalapathy 69, which is touted to be his last film before he fully plunges into electoral politics. However, there was no truth to it.

While Karthik feels grateful for the opportunities to collaborate with leading stars, he believes it should not be the only aim of filmmakers. "Working with big stars like Vijay and Ajith should not be the only goal for a filmmaker. I don't consider it a big deal," Karthik told Cinema Vikatan.

Karthik has so far directed Superstar Rajinikanth in Petta, Chiyaan Vikram in Mahaan, and now Suriya in his next. Talking about his upcoming movie, he noted that he has been a fan of Suriya for a long time. "Suriya is an awesome performer. I was in talks for a long time to do a film with him. After Jigarthanda DoubleX, I narrated a story and it quickly led to us shooting it," he said.

Actor Suriya was busy shooting for Kanguva until earlier this year. Next, he was expected to start a period drama with Sudha Kongara, titled Suriya 43. However, it didn't go on the floors as expected. Suriya claimed that the project needs extensive pre-production work, citing this as the reason for putting it on hold.

Karthik is set to start shooting for Suriya 44 in Port Blair, Andaman. The filmmakers are building huge sets there for the upcoming action movie.

Karthik is also hopeful of directing Superstar Rajinikanth soon. "After Petta, I narrated a few stories to Thalaivar, but they didn't suit him. I am always ready to pitch a story to Thalaivar. He has been continuously doing films. If he is ready to listen, I can tell him. It's like something in the pipeline," he added.
