Shah Rukh Khan and Karan Johar ’s friendship dates back more than two decades. The two share a close bond even with each other’s family as well. The superstar’s family got acquainted with Karan at the time when the latter worked as assistant director in the 1995 film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. And much after that Karan thought of making his debut as a full-fledged director with the 1998 Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. But his idea was not welcomed by Khan’s family, except for Shah Rukh’s wife Gauri who knew of his potential from the beginning.
In one of the episodes of the Netflix series Fabulous Lives Of Bollywood Wives , Gauri told about she made Karan's debut possible with Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. The conversation started with Karan telling Gauri and Maheep Kapoor about how Ranveer Singh was once curious to know about his relationship with star wives and Khans. He recalled what he told him, “We go back nearly 27 years and it began with me becoming AD on Dilwale(DDLJ) and that’s how I met Gauri and one thing led to the other. He then recalled Maheep’s reaction to what she thought of him making his debut as director.

After that Maheep recollected, “He used to hang at our Tea’s and he was 20 thousand kilos more overweight. And he said one day “I am making a movie” and I was like this fool is making a movie.” Gauri then interrupted and revealed that’s what her mother also thought about Karan at that time. “I told mom Shah Rukh is shooting for Karan’s film, she reacted, bilkul nahi, woh kabhi picture nahi bana sakta”, only there was one person who always knew that he is a genius,” she said pointing at herself at the end. To which Karan agreed. Well, it inferred that Shah Rukh was also not confident about Karan’s potential since Gauri didn’t count him in.
