    Kangana Ranaut recently shared a reel of Meena Kumari’s film Pakeezah and penned a note for her.

    Kangana Ranaut is one the most celebrated actresses of Bollywood who recently turned a politician after she won the Lok Sabha seat from Mandi as a Bharatiya Janata party candidate. The actress-turned-politician is popular for her films such Queen, and Tanu Weds Manu, among others. Now, talking about the veteran actresses of Bollywood, Kangana penned a wrote for legendary actress Meena Kumari and called her an actress amongst heroines.

    Taking to her Instagram stories, Kangana shared a reel of the iconic film Pakeezah featuring Meena Kumari and penned a heartfelt note for her. She wrote, “I haven’t followed much of Meena ji’s work but I read a lot and she seemed highly celebrated for her craft. This hair-raising transition from grief to hysterical chuckle to sheer disillusionment is beyond supreme.”

    Kangana concludes by writing, “Apparently in her days one didn’t dare call other heroines actresses, media and film industry said they are all heroines, there is one actress and that is Meena Kumari.”

    Meena Kumari - the tragedy queen

    Born as Mahjabeen, she was the second daughter of harmonium player Ali and singer Iqbal Banu, both of whom worked in Hindi films. She started acting in Hindi films at the age of four and made her acting debut with Vijay Bhatt’s Leatherface in 1939. Some of her notable works include Adhuri Kahani, Ek Hi Bhool, Aladdin Aur Jadui Chirag, Baiju Bawra, Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam and Pakeezah. Meena Kumari was popularly called the tragedy queen for portraying long-suffering women.

    Kangana, on the other hand, is gearing up for the release of her highly anticipated film Emergency where she will be essaying the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Directed by Kangana herself, Emergency will make its world premiere on September 7. The film is backed by Zee Studios, Renu Pitti and Kangana. The actress last month won the Lok Sabha elections from Mandi by defeating Congress’ candidate Vikramaditya Singh.
