The latest Telugu movie, Kalki 2898 AD, is well poised to become the biggest-ever hit in the history of Indian cinema if it continues to perform the same way in ticket sales. Starring Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles, the movie is written and directed by Nag Ashwin.

Kalki 2898 AD opened in cinemas worldwide last Thursday to packed houses. Despite releasing on a non-holiday, the film debuted at the box office by earning more than Rs 191 crore globally. The film has continued to exceed expectations despite mixed reactions from audiences and critics.

Made on a whopping budget of Rs 600 crore, Kalki 2898 AD earned more than Rs 555 crore within the first five days of its release , according to the producers. However, the Indian box office business lacks a sophisticated system to account for every ticket sold, and there have been instances of producers providing inflated collection numbers to boost the sales of their movies.

That said, the numbers provided by the producers of Kalki 2898 AD, Vyjayanthi Movies, are very close to the box office earnings reported by independent box office trackers.

According to Chennai-based Cinetrak, Kalki 2898 AD sold more than Rs 483 crore worth of tickets globally during the four-day extended opening weekend. Reports from AndhraBoxOffice.com peg the film's four-day collection at upwards of Rs 497 crore.

Trade analysts across the country unanimously agree that Kalki 2898 AD continued its bullish trend in cinemas even on its first Monday, suggesting that it may have long legs. This has further added credence to the possibility of Kalki 2898 AD emerging as a bigger success than the Oscar-winning movie RRR, which earned more than Rs 1200 crore globally, and Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan's Jawan, which ended its worldwide theatrical run with a little more than Rs 1000 crore.

The producers announced on Tuesday that the film created a new record in North America with more than $12 million in earnings, which translates to approximately Rs 100 crore. Kalki 2898 AD is only the second Indian film after RRR to breach the $10 million mark during the opening weekend in North America, traditionally the biggest overseas market for Telugu movies.

Kalki 2898 AD is the first "pan-India" hit of 2024. The film is a rage in the South Indian states and has also emerged as the biggest draw in the Hindi-speaking belt, which is a crucial factor should the film breach the Rs 1000 crore mark.
