The latest Telugu sci-fi epic, Kalki 2898 AD, has taken the box office by storm. It seems to be the top preference of movie-goers across the country and is poised for an excellent second weekend. But, how is the film, which also stars Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan, doing in theatres in Tamil Nadu?
For the uninitiated, the audiences in Tamil Nadu typically take some time to warm up to movies of other languages. Unless a movie is utterly mind-blowing in one aspect or another, it may not find much success in the state. But, if it clicks, then the sky is the limit. For example, Telugu superstar Prabhas' Baahubali: The Conclusion earned more than Rs 140 crore, setting a new benchmark for other Tamil movies in the state.
So, how is Kalki 2898 AD, which has Prabhas playing the lead, performing at the Tamil Nadu box office? As per the latest reports, the movie is doing very well.
The producers revealed that Kalki 2898 AD grossed more than Rs 28 crore in Tamil Nadu by the end of its first week. It's also set for a strong second week by retaining the majority of the screens. Currently, Kalki 2898 AD is running on more than 400 screens across Tamil Nadu. And with no major challenger at the box office, the movie might multiply its gains during the weekend.
Even though Kamal Haasan only makes a cameo appearance, his screen presence and his out-of-the-world get-up in this dystopian drama, written and directed by Nag Ashwin, has created waves across the country. Kamal's cameo is definitely working in favor of the movie.
Kalki 2898 AD will have a free run at the Tamil Nadu box office till next Friday. Kamal's much-awaited Indian 2 is set to open in cinemas on July 12 and will affect the movie's performance in the state.
At present, Kalki 2898 AD's worldwide gross is pegged at more than Rs 700 crore.
