The latest Telugu movie Kalki 2898 AD, starring Telugu superstar Prabhas, has taken the biggest opening globally for an Indian film in 2024. The producers on Friday officially confirmed that the film earned Rs 191.5 crore from its worldwide ticket sales on day one.

Kalki 2898 AD, which also stars Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in the lead roles, has taken the third biggest opening in Indian cinema history, following SS Rajamouli's RRR and Baahubali 2, which earned Rs 220 crore and Rs 214 crore, respectively.

Kalki 2898 AD had earned more than Rs 100 crore in advance bookings alone. The film is expected to continue this strong performance during the weekend, recovering the majority of its budget within the first four days.

The film debuted in Telugu states by grossing more than Rs 39 crore in ticket sales and earned close to Rs 10 crore in Karnataka. It also exceeded expectations by taking in more than Rs 3 crore on opening day in Tamil Nadu. The film's earnings are estimated to be over Rs 2 crore in Kerala, with another Rs 21 crore-plus collection in the Hindi belt. The film's performance in North India makes it 2024's biggest movie in the Hindi-speaking region.

Kalki 2898 AD also performed exceedingly well in North America, a strong overseas market for the Telugu film industry. By the end of its first weekend, the film is expected to breah the $10 million mark. "#Kalki2898AD Looking at the current advance bookings, film is heading towards a $10M-$12M Gross thru the first weekend in North America. Only BB2 ($10.4M) has crossed $10M thru the first weekend. Likely to be the All-Time First Weekend Record across any movie in Indian History!!," said Venky Box Office.

However, the film fell below expectations in certain key areas in the Telugu states. "The response from mass centres isn't as expected, and the difference is visible across Telangana & AP. Record-breaking advances didn't turn into records as the B&C centres remained below par due to the futuristic genre. Audience finding it tough to follow," tweeted AndhraBoxOffice.com.
