Jamie Foxx's advocacy for racial justice echoes in Netflix's Project Power: 'Work the system harder'

It's almost uncanny how Netflix's superhero movie Project Power, filmed two years ago, echoes present societal issues. The film highlights a dialogue by Art, portrayed by Jamie Foxx, who counsels Robin, a young New Orleans teen played by Dominique Fishback. Foxx's character warns Robin, "You're young, you're Black, you're a woman: The system is designed to swallow you whole."

This dialogue gains significance amidst the ongoing activism propelled by incidents such as the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. In fact, Foxx himself is a vocal supporter of the Justice for Breonna Taylor movement and has participated in several protests honoring George Floyd.

Reflecting on the importance of Art's dialogue in today's socio-political climate, Foxx comments, "We didn't know we would be faced with these incredibly challenging times when we did this movie two years ago, but great minds can feel things in the air." The Oscar-winning actor elaborates, "Our eyes are open to how the distribution of power can be used in the worst way possible...All we ask for is decency, and that’s crazy when someone is mad at you when you ask for decency. So let those words sink in.”

Echoing Foxx's sentiments, screenwriter Mattson Tomlin underlines that the film is about power and the system, also bringing attention to racial disparities. He specifically wrote the lead roles keeping black actors in mind, further emphasizing the representation of black heroes in Hollywood.

Fishback expresses excitement about playing a part where black heroes not only are saved but also do the saving themselves, shedding light on Robin's ability and power.

Project Power hints at a future with fresh adventures for its superheroes, and Tomlin expresses interest in expanding this universe, teasing possibilities of spinoffs and even comic books.

Foxx's involvement in 'Project Power' anticipates his upcoming role in Todd McFarlane's 'Spawn', underscoring the growing presence of black superheroes. Foxx concludes, "What Black Panther did was let us know that it’s so necessary, and it’s the time."
