The theatres in Tamil Nadu were going through a dry spell, lacking exciting new movies to draw audiences. Films like Captain Miller and Ayalaan, which the trade hoped would revive business, underperformed. Few predicted that Aranmanai 4 would provide an unexpected break for Tamil cinema stakeholders.
Aranmanai 4 has emerged as a dark horse at the box office, an unlikely hero saving the state's film business. The producers announced on Wednesday that the movie has crossed the coveted Rs 100 crore mark at the global box office, making it the biggest hit of Tamil cinema in 2024.
As per trade sources, Aranmanai 4 has earned more than Rs 55 crore within the first three weeks of its release in Tamil Nadu alone. It also exceeded expectations in terms of ticket sales in other parts of the country and overseas markets.
While discerning audiences may not have approved, the film seems to have resonated with family audiences, making it a surprise summer winner and the biggest hit in the Aranmanai franchise.
Filmmaker Sundar C launched the Aranmanai series a decade ago in 2014. It provided him with a much-needed boost and has become his go-to for reviving his career.
The theatres in Tamil Nadu were craving movies that would attract mass audiences, and Aranmanai 4 faced no major competition at the box office. Surprisingly, even critics offered mostly favourable reviews, contributing to its massive success.
Despite its formulaic nature, Aranmanai 4 is a deeply entertaining movie starring Tamannaah Bhatia, Raashii Khanna, Ramachandra Raju, Santhosh Prathap, Kovai Sarala, Yogi Babu, VTV Ganesh, and Delhi Ganesh. Besides writing and directing it, Sundar C also played the lead role in it.
