Indian 2 on OTT: Kamal Haasan's action drama expected to stream on this date

Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan's latest movie, Indian 2, has stepped into its second week amid a lot of unfavourable reviews and opinions. In the meantime, Indian 2 is also expected to make its digital premiere soon.

Netflix has bagged the streaming rights to Indian 2. As per the prevailing trend in the industry, Indian 2 might arrive on streaming platforms after completing an obligatory four-week run in cinemas. It has become a norm for new Tamil movies to hit streaming in less than 30 days if they manage to find a streaming partner before the theatrical release.

OTT platforms have rationalized the way they go about buying new movies. Most movies are now required to first prove their merits at the box office to find takers on streaming. Also, the streaming platforms have shown interest only in making investments in star-driven movies to drive up subscriptions.

When producers in the South secure a pre-release streaming deal, it often comes with a built-in factor of a short theatrical window. Take, for example, Vijay Sethupathi's Maharaja. The revenge drama opened in cinemas on June 14 to mostly positive reviews. It also emerged as one of the biggest hits of 2024 in Tamil cinema by grossing more than Rs 100 crore globally. Notwithstanding its successful performance in theatres, Maharaja made its debut on Netflix on July 12, less than a month after its initial release in theatres.

Based on this practice, Indian 2, which was released on July 12, might just become available around the time of the Independence Day holiday in August. Considering Indian 2's ongoing struggles at the box office, the producers may not have many qualms about giving it a digital release soon.
