Just a couple of weeks back, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha released what one would call it as one of the most prestigious projects of his career spanning many years. But, since the last few days, the series has been in the news for not so good reasons. The last few days saw a huge uproar on social media wherein it was being complained that the series’ makers have distorted the ‘crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers’.

Just a couple of days ago, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had asked the Netflix India content chief Monika Shergill to clarify and explain the allegedly argumentative facets of the web series, as per a report in India Today.

In a media statement by Netflix India, it was stated as, ‘For the benefit of audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, the opening disclaimer has been updated to include the real and code names of the hijackers. The code names in the series reflect those used during the actual event.’

In a media conference which was held today (September 3), the series’ director Anubhav Sinha slammed a journalist, when he was asked about the controversy surrounding IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack’. On his part, Anubhav initially refused to answer the question and insisted the journalist watch the show first.

As for the controversy surrounding the said series, there were many netizens who have gone to the extent of accusing the makers of the aforementioned series of 'whitewashing' the events surrounding the hijack, in lieu of the names used by the makers of the hijackers as 'Bhola' and 'Shankar'.

On the other hand, there was also a PIL which was filed against the makers of the web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack. The said petition read as, ‘The distortion of crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers not only misrepresents historical events but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and misinformation, warranting interference of this court to prevent further public misunderstanding and potential harm’.

As for the series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, it stars an ensemble cast including Vijay Varma, Arvind Swamy, Dia Mirza, Patralekhaa, Naseeruddin Shah, Pankaj Kapur, and others.
