Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar actress Sharmin Segal has been at the receiving end of criticism ever since she starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus web series on Netflix. Sharmin was called out for her ‘expressionless acting’ which did not go well with the audience. The viewers termed her yet another example of nepotism who bagged the lead role because she is the niece of the series' director. Speaking about the trolling, the actress said that she gave her all to Alamzeb’s character and there have been some positives too, which people tend to overlook.

Speaking to News18 Showsha, Sharmin said that there has been positive feedback too which people don’t want to talk about. “I had given my all to Alamzeb’s character. We tend to fixate on the negatives but there are so many positives that have also come along, which we don’t talk about. It’s perhaps not interesting enough to talk about positives and we tend to look over them to some degree,” she said.

The actress disabled her comment section on Instagram as she became the object of scrutiny ever since the release of Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar on Netflix. Speaking about her new approach, Sharmin said that by overlooking things, she was missing out on a lot of love also but has recently decided to go through it all because she feels that the audience’s opinion will help her be the best version of herself.

“There was a point when I was not looking at many things (reviews) but then slowly, I realised that I was also missing out on a lot of love that I was getting. I’ve now started paying attention to that. Over the last few days, I decided to look through it all. The audience’s opinion is what will probably help you be the best version of yourself,” she explained.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali on casting Sharmin

Speaking about casting Sharmin in the series and defending her amid all the trolling, the actress’ uncle and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali told India Today, “She has a face of what Alamzeb should be – somebody who doesn’t want to be a tawaif or has no makings of it. You needed somebody with very fresh, innocent quality to her, somebody who doesn’t talk like a tawaif. And that person wants to break free with some pursuit of wanting to write poetry. So, I felt that Sharmin was the correct choice for Alamzeb.”

Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar, starring Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh and Sharmin Segal, premiered on Netflix on May 1. The makers of the series recently confirmed that Season two is in the works. The new season will follow the courtesans moving into the film world.
