GV Prakash, Selvaraghavan reunite: Is Dhanush's Aayirathil Oruvan 2 finally in the works?
Composer GV Prakash Kumar has sparked major speculation about the possibility of Aayirathil Oruvan 2 after announcing his reunion with director Selvaraghavan.
GV Prakash, Selvaraghavan start work on their new project.
Composer GV Prakash Kumar took to social media on Monday to announce his much-anticipated reunion with director Selvaraghavan. The two previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed films Aayirathil Oruvan and Mayakkam Enna, and their new project has sparked speculation that they could be working on Aayirathil Oruvan 2, the long-awaited sequel to Selvaraghavan's cult classic.
"After Aayirathil Oruvan and Mayakkam Enna... A new beginning... #AayirathilOruvan #MayakkamEnna @selvaraghavan. A new journey starts today," GV Prakash wrote, fueling fan excitement.
Selvaraghavan, whose recent focus has been on acting, last directed Naane Varuvean in 2022. The film, starring his brother Dhanush, marked a rare misstep for the duo, as it received a lukewarm response both critically and commercially. This followed a string of successful collaborations between the brothers that shaped Dhanush's career, with movies like Kaadhal Kondein, Pudhupettai, Aayirathil Oruvan, and Mayakkam Enna.
While it remains unclear whether Dhanush will be part of Selvaraghavan's next project, rumours are swirling that the new film could indeed be Aayirathil Oruvan 2. Originally released in 2010 with Karthi in the lead, Aayirathil Oruvan was praised for its bold storytelling and ambitious scale but struggled at the box office. Over time, the film has garnered a massive cult following, thanks in part to its repeated telecasts and availability on streaming platforms.
Selvaraghavan had previously announced plans to make Aayirathil Oruvan 2, with Dhanush in the lead role. However, he also noted that the project would require extensive pre-production and wouldn’t start until. With GV Prakash’s announcement, many fans are speculating that production may now be kicking off sooner than expected, though an official confirmation is still awaited.
Selvaraghavan’s journey has come full circle this year, having acted under Dhanush’s direction in Raayan, where he played a fatherly figure to his brother. The film was a box-office success, reaffirming the deep professional connection between the two.
