The latest Tamil movie Garudan is exceeding trade expectations in terms of ticket sales in Tamil Nadu. Starring Soori in the lead role, the film has already been declared a 'blockbuster' by the filmmakers.

According to reports, Garudan's collection on Saturday jumped nearly 40 percent from its opening day. As per Cinetrak, the film's earnings on Saturday were pegged at Rs 3.82 crore, compared to a little over Rs 2.70 crore on Friday.

The film is showing strong growth trends at the box office, and the filmmakers are confident that its earnings will surpass those of the first two days. "#Garudan - flooding positive reviews, flying high at the box office!" tweeted director Durai Senthilkumar.

The box office in Tamil Nadu experienced a dry spell during the first few months of this year. Stakeholders had to rely on movies from the Malayalam film industry to fill seats in Tamil Nadu theatres. However, the industry recently bounced back with director Sundar C's Aranmanai 4. The horror comedy brought audiences back to theatres and earned more than Rs 64 crore in ticket sales in Tamil Nadu alone.

Judging from its initial performance, the makers of Garudan seem confident it will become one of the highest-grossing movies in Tamil cinema this year.

Garudan is based on a story written by filmmaker Vetrimaaran and is said to be inspired by the Indian epic Mahabharatham. Soori's character is apparently inspired by Karnan. The film follows the moral struggles of the protagonist who is forced to choose between justice and loyalty. The film also stars Sasikumar and Unni Mukundan in lead roles.
