Explained - Why Panchayat's Neena Gupta thought her 'elite' friends wouldn't like the series

The wait for the third season of Panchayat is over, as the makers have already dropped the trailer for the new season. It shows that elections for the new ‘pradhan’ of Phulera have begun, creating rival groups in the village. Speaking about the love that the series has received over the years, Neena Gupta, who plays Manju Devi in the series, revealed that when season one was released, she thought that her elite, English-speaking friends would not even watch the show, forget about liking it.

Neena Gupta on Panchayat being liked by audiences from all walks of life

During a conversation with Bollywood Hungama, when Neena Gupta was asked if she sees different age groups watching Panchayat, the actress replied that Panchayat is the only project she has done or watched that is being liked by people from different areas of life. This includes an elite English-speaking audience that does not even like or watch Hindi-language films, as well as people who do manual labour for a living.

She said, “I am shocked, mujhe lagta tha jo ye mere angrezi bolne wale friends hai unko nahi accha lagega, accha toh chodo, dekhenge bhi nahi. (I am shocked. I thought my English-speaking friends would not even watch Panchayat, forget about liking it).”

But much to Neena’s surprise, her friends liked and appreciated the drama comedy show. She recalled an instance where her friend from Delhi messaged her, and she was shocked that the person was watching Panchayat. She said, “Har aadmi jisko pata hai wo dekhta hai (People who know about Panchayat, they surely watch it).”

Speaking about this further, actor Jitendra Kumar, who plays Abhishek Tripathi in the series, added that when the show first released on Amazon Prime Video, the duo (Jitendra and Neena) thought that the series was a little slow but the first messages they received were from their friends in the United States who appreciated the series.

He said, “Pehle messages jo aaye they wo US se the toh uske baad hamko laga ki unko pasand aa raha hai toh shayad aage logo ko bhi accha lagega (After we received the first messages from our friends in the US, we thought that the people in India would also like it).”
