Exclusive- Kiran Rao on Aamir Khan’s audition for Laapataa Ladies: ‘Would have brought his own brand of Aamirness’
In an exclusive interview with Desimartini, Kiran Rao talks about her decision to cast Ravi Kishan in Laapataa Ladies instead of Aamir Khan
Over a decade after her first directorial Dhobi Ghat, filmmaker Kiran Rao returned to the director’s chair for Laapataa Ladies. The upcoming film, co-directed by Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, is all set to arrive in theatres on 1st March. But the team has already begun promotions and just recently reached the national capital for a media screening. At the event, Kiran revealed that Aamir had auditioned for a role in the film. However, they took a creative decision and in the end, the supremely talented Ravi Kishan was onboarded as the character instead of Aamir.
In an exclusive interview with Desimartini, when asked if she is happy about her decision to cast Ravi instead of Aamir now that the film is ready, Kiran shared, “You know, I’m a 1000% happy with my decision because I think Ravi fits it so organically, so naturally and he did such an incredible job. And I think Aamir fully agrees because when we were, when Aamir was testing for the role and we went over the test and we were discussing should he do it, we both assessed what Ravi would bring to the table that would be different. I feel there’s something very earthy and organic about Ravi, which is unique to him also. I think he really makes the role shine.”
The director further shared that she hopes to share Aamir’s audition tape with the world one day. Kiran stated, “Having said that, of course Aamir would have brought his own brand of Aamirness to the role and it would have been very fun to watch. So someday I want to release that audition, so that audiences can decide whether I made the right decision.”
How cool would it be if Kiran Rao directed Aamir Khan some day? We hope our wishful thinking manifests their next project!
