Can Kanguva earn Rs 1000 crore? Suriya believes it's achievable
Kanguva is set to make waves across India, with expectations for it to push boundaries in box office success and impact Tamil cinema on a pan-Indian scale.
Suriya in and as Kanguva
Tamil superstar Suriya's upcoming movie Kanguva is generating huge expectations, with hopes that it will elevate the Tamil film industry’s commercial success and become a major pan-Indian hit.
While speaking to the media in Hyderabad, Suriya shared his belief in Kanguva's potential to meet its ambitious box office goals. When asked about producer KE Gnanavel Raja's statement that Kanguva could gross Rs 2000 crore globally, Suriya responded, “What’s the crime in dreaming big? I believe in manifestation and the power of the universe. Let it happen, and let everyone be happy.”
Though reaching Rs 2000 crore in box office receipts is a tall order, a more realistic goal of Rs 1000 crore remains within reach. Recent South Indian blockbusters like RRR and KGF Chapter 2 have highlighted the massive potential of India's box office market when a film resonates with audiences nationwide. The Kannada film Kantara, which was produced on a modest Rs 20 crore budget, went on to become a national sensation, grossing over Rs 400 crore in 2022, proving that with the right audience connection, the sky's the limit.
Kanguva’s producers are optimistic that the film can break through language barriers and connect with audiences across India. While Suriya enjoys a loyal fan base in South India, the Hindi-speaking regions remain largely uncharted territory for him. Recently, he devoted significant time promoting Kanguva across North Indian states alongside co-star Bobby Deol, hoping to expand his reach.
Whether Kanguva can indeed be a ground-breaking success for Tamil cinema will be revealed after its release on November 15.
Kanguva is touted to be the costliest film in Suriya's career. The film's budget is pegged at over Rs 300 crore, and has been in production for over three years. Written and directed by Siva, Kanguva is a fantasy drama that revolves around warring tribes set in a period many centuries ago.
