2024 has been a rewarding year for the Malayalam film industry. The industry not only continued to solidify its reputation for producing modern-day classics at a remarkable frequency but also established itself as one of the rising powers in the commercial aspects of the filmmaking business.

IMDb, the popular online movie database, has picked the top 10 best Indian movies of 2024 so far, and Malayalam movies dominate the list, suggesting the industry's growing popularity and fandom worldwide. Aadujeevitham has topped the list, followed by the psychological horror thriller Bramayugam. The recently released family drama Ullozhukku has also made the coveted list.

Some of the choices on the list may raise questions and likely pave the way for disagreements among ardent movie buffs. The other movies featured on this list include Do Aur Do Pyaar, Jhamkudi, Kill, LSD2, Maidaan, Madgaon Express, and Pushtaini.

Unlike last year, the Malayalam film industry is not just churning out critical darlings that don't sell a lot of tickets at the box office. Malayalam filmmakers seem to have found a fine balance in making movies with significant artistic sensibilities while also appealing to wider audiences.

The commercial success of Aadujeevitham, for example, suggests a change in the way mass audiences appreciate big-screen entertainment.

Aadujeevitham stars Prithviraj in the lead role and is director Blessy's most ambitious attempt in his filmmaking career. After a struggle spanning 16 years, Prithviraj and Blessy were able to release the movie in cinemas worldwide earlier this year. Even though the film was high on art, hordes of audiences showed up at the box office to appreciate it, making it one of the biggest commercial hits of Malayalam cinema.

Made on a budget of Rs 80 crore, Aadujeevitham earned more than Rs 160 crore in ticket sales.
