Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon crime drama revolves around the Oklahoma murders in the Osage nation in the 1920s. The movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro in the lead roles. But did you know, that a century before the release of this movie, another long-lost movie had also attempted to showcase the brutality that was meted out to the Osage tribe? According to a news report in Hollywood Reporter, Tragedies Of The Osage Hills was called the most ‘sensational picture of the age.’ It was released on May 11, 1926, at the American Theatre in downtown Cushing, Oklahoma. It was produced by Native American filmmaker James Young Deer and his partner, Oklahoma hotel owner Frank L. Thompson.

The movie was released closely after the real incidents

The riveting movie was described as a story about the Osage Reign Of Terror which was interwoven with a ‘tender love story.’ The same subject is now been explored in Killers Of The Flower Moon which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by David Grann. For the unversed, Tragedies Of The Osage Hills was released just four months after the perpetrators of the Osage assassinations namely William King Hale, Ernest Burkhart, and John Ramsey were arrested. These individuals will be played by Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tay Mitchell respectively in the Scorsese directorial. They were accused of the brutal killings of more than a dozen members of the Osage tribe after oil was discovered on their land.

Tragedies Of The Osage Hills starred Young Deer’s wife Lillian A King who essayed the role of Little Princess Prairie Flower. Even though the movie took some heavy fictional liberty, it was praised by the local newspapers urging the audiences to watch it. It will be interesting to see whether Killers Of The Flower Moon recreates the impact.
