Bappi Lahiri's love for gold was as famous as his music, here's why he never went anywhere without his gold chairs
Bollywood’s ‘Disco King’ Bappi Lahiri is no more amongst us to entertain us with his music. The late singer and composer, however, has left behind a rich legacy of music which fans can turn to. Other than his undying love for music, the singer was also well known for his love for sporting gold.
Bappi Lahiri was hardly ever spotted with his thick gold chairs, rings and bracelets and the reason for wearing so much gold on him was about more than a fashion statement. The singer who died at 69 due to obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on Tuesday night, had once revealed how all the gold that he wore was linked to his music.
The late singer once said in an old interview for Speaking Tree that he considered the gold he wore to be lucky for his career. Bappi Da had recalled how he got his first blockbuster Zakhmi soon after his mother had gifted him a gold chain with Hare Rama Hare Krishna locket. She had told him that the gold would prove to be lucky for him.
The singer had further revealed that he would get his gold chains from his family and never travelled without them. He kept adding new gold chains to his collection with each big box office success of films he gave music to.
After the singer’s mother his wife Chitrani kept up the legacy and gave him a gold chain with a Ganpati locket. Bappi Lahiri added that he owned as many as seven gold chains and he never weighs them since they all have gods on them.
The singer was a big devotee of Lord Ganpati and had once seen in his dream that he should wear the god’s locket on his chest and following that he added to his musical accomplishments an entry in the Guinness Book Of World Records.
Talking about always having some gold on him, Bappi Lahiri had added during the interview, “No matter where I travel, some gold jewellery always travels with me. My gold jewellery is so heavy that I can't carry all of it with me abroad. I always want to carry God with me. I have never weighed my gold jewellery. On every chain, God is there, so I have never weighed any of my jewellery.”
Bappi Lahiri died on Tuesday evening after having spent a month in the hospital due to multiple health issues. The singer is survived by his wife and kids Bappa Lahiri and daughter Reema Lahiri. The funeral for the legendary singer will be held in Mumbai tomorrow.
