Bappi Lahiri’s doctor talks about late singer’s health issues; reveals he had been quite sick for some time
Legendary singer and music composer Bappi Lahiri bid the world a final adieu earlier this week.
A few days after legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar left for her heavenly aboard, musical genius Bappi Lahiri breathed his last at Mumbai’s CritiCare hospital. In a matter of just 10 days, our country lost two gems and we were left devastated. Bappi Da, who was fondly referred to as the Disco King, was discharged on 14thFebruary after 29 days of hospitalization. However, a day later his health deteriorated and after the doctor visited him at home, the singer was taken to the hospital. On the night of 15th February, Bappi Da bid the world a final adieu due to obstructive sleep apnea.
In a recent interview with ETimes, Bappi Da’s doctor, Dr Deepak Namjoshi, opened up about the singer’s condition. When asked if this was a case of post-COVID complications, because Bappi Da had contracted the virus last year, he replied, “No, Bappi da had health issues for a long time. Yes, he was infected with COVID in April 2021 but what happened now cannot be called a post-COVID complication. It was due to his OSA # (Obstructive Sleep Apnea) and current chest infection which had set in due to his obesity. Many obese people tend to have OSA.” The doctor further revealed that Bappi Da was admitted to the hospital 3 to 4 times in the past one year.
In the end, during his 29 days of hospitalization, he spent 15 days in the ICU. Dr Deepak was quoted saying, “He had been quite sick for some time and in such cases, we keep seeing such outcomes.” He further explained that in the case of obstructive sleep apnea, any organ can crash without warning, especially the heart. The doctors can’t say for sure if that is what happened with Bappi Da because they had very little time to revive him. But Dr Deepak went on to add, “But that seems to be the likely reason. He was very critical when he was brought in by ambulance. We did try to revive him in the hospital but... Whatever happened is very sad.”
Even though his voice had changed during treatment because he was on a bypass machine for his night breathing, Bappi Da used to sing for Dr Deepak and would tell him stories. He was a true gem, which is why he will continue to live on in our hearts forever.
