Netflix officially confirmed on Thursday the streaming date for the latest Bollywood movie, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Starring Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff in the lead roles, the action-comedy will premiere on the platform on June 6, less than two months after its theatrical debut.

Unlike South Indian films, Hindi films follow a strict protocol when it comes to digital releases. Almost all movies remain off streaming platforms for at least 8 weeks after their initial release in cinemas. Movies with a shorter OTT window face penalties at the box office, with theatres and multiplex screens refusing to screen them.

For example, multiplexes and single-screen theatres in North Indian states refused to screen the Hindi version of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay's Leo due to its short-term box office plans. Subsequently, the filmmakers also refused to release the Tamil version in national multiplex chains.

Stakeholders in the Hindi film industry are very particular about this practice to protect the sanctity of the theatrical experience amid the growing dominance of streaming platforms.

In the South, however, it has become a prevailing trend for new movies to start streaming within four weeks of their theatrical debut. Only a handful of films defy this trend in favour of an extended theatrical run.

Even though Bade Miyan Chote Miyan tanked at the box office, the producers followed the 8-week protocol for its streaming debut.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan was expected to become one of the big hits of Bollywood this year. Made on a massive budget, the James Bond-esque comedy-drama follows the efforts of two valiant Indian soldiers, played by Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff, to thwart the plans of a nefarious villain, played by Prithviraj Sukumaran.

However, the film opened to poor reviews and subsequently failed to click with audiences. The film's final box office collection is pegged at less than Rs 100 crore against its Rs 300-plus crore budget.
