The news of music maestro AR Rahman’s divorce from his wife Saira Banu came as a shock to many. After 29 years of marriage, the couple announced their separation through a joint statement issued by Saira Banu's lawyer, saying that a significant emotional strain has come in their relationship. Hours after the announcement, AR Rahman addressed the heartbreaking update on social media, expressing gratitude to his friends for showing kindness and respecting privacy in these times. His children Ameen and Khatija also took to social media, requesting privacy and respect for the family.

The Oscar-winning musician spoke about his divorce in a social media post, stating that the couple had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things seem to carry an unseen end. In the post, Rahman expressed his gratitude to his friends for their kindness and for respecting the family’s privacy as they go through a fragile chapter in life. He added, “Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again.”

His son, Ameen Rahman, also took to his Instagram stories and requested for privacy in tough times. He wrote, "We kindly request everyone to respect our privacy during this time. Thank you for your understanding,”
His sister Khatija too took to her Instagram stories and wrote that she would greatly appreciate it if this matter could be treated with the utmost privacy and respect. Sharing a screenshot of Rahman's tweet on her stories, Khatija wrote, “Keep us in your prayers.”
For those unaware, AR Rahman and his wife Saira on Tuesday announced their separation in a joint statement. The statement further added, “Despite their deep love for each other, the couple has found that the tensions and difficulties have created an insurmountable gap between them, one that neither party feels able to bridge at this time."

Rahman and Saira tied the knot in 1995 and have three children together - Khatija, Raheema and Ameen. Speaking about his marriage earlier in an interview with Simi Garewal, Rahman said that in his 20s he did not get time to look for a partner and hence asked his mother to look for him. “I was 29 and I told my mother. I said, find me a bride,” he said.
