Italian actress Valeria Golino joins the star cast of Angelina Jolie's biographical drama, Maria.

Angelina Jolie is going to step into the shoes of world-famous opera singer Maria Callas in the latter’s biopic which is titled Maria. The movie has been helmed by Pablo Larrain of Spencer and Jackie fame. Now, the latest development suggests that Italian actress Valeria Golino will be essaying the role of Callas’ sister.

According to a news report in Variety, the shooting of the same will begin in mid-October in Budapest. Valeria Golino will be playing the role of Maria Callas’ older sister Yakinthi who also went by the name Jackie. Golino was previously seen in the Netflix show, The Lying Life Of Adults, and in season 2 of The Morning Show. Maria will also be starring Turkish actor Haluk Bilginer as Greek business tycoon Aristotle Onassis.

The news report furthermore stated that the makers of Maria have also roped in Alba Rohrwacher, Pierfrancesco Favino, and Kodi Smit-McPhee in pivotal roles. However, there is no clarity on what parts they will be essaying in the movie. The logline of the Angelina Jolie starrer reads, “tells the tumultuous, beautiful, and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.” The movie will be penned by Steven Knight of Peaky Blinders and Spencer fame.
Maria Callas was a Greek soprano singer who went on to become one of the most famous opera singers of the 20th century. Having been born in Manhattan, she received her opera training in Greece, then migrated to Italy at just the age of 13 to pursue a stable singing career. She dealt with severe near-sightedness which almost left her blind. Callas’ life was also surrounded by many scandals and controversies, both on the personal and professional front. She had an affair with Aristotle Onassis who later went on to become the second husband of Jackie Kennedy.
