Filmmaker Mari Selvaraj's latest movie, Vaazhai, opened in cinemas on Friday to glowing reviews from critics. The movie is reportedly holding strong in theatres and is poised to become a successful venture. Mari has multiple projects in different stages of development, including Bison.
Bison is fast nearing completion, and soon after, Mari will join hands with Tamil star Dhanush once again. This project will mark Mari's second collaboration with Dhanush, following their successful partnership on Karnan.
Karnan was a significant film for Mari as it showcased his ability to handle big-budget, star-driven projects while maintaining his unique filmmaking sensibilities. Released in 2021, during a period when the country was still grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic, Karnan was screened with only 50% occupancy allowed in theatres. Despite these restrictions, the movie garnered critical acclaim and became a box office hit, providing much-needed relief to the industry stakeholders.
Dhanush played the lead role of a young man who takes up arms against caste oppression. The film sparked widespread debate and further solidified Mari's stature in Tamil cinema.
Currently, Mari is busy shooting Bison, which stars Dhruv Vikram in the lead role. Billed as a sports drama, Bison is expected to be high on action while also shedding light on the ills of caste prejudice in society.
Meanwhile, Mari is basking in the success of Vaazhai. The who's who of the Tamil film industry have extended their support and celebrated Mari for this rural-based drama, which explores oppression from a child's perspective.
