Director Mari Selvaraj's critically acclaimed film Vaazhai has made its much-anticipated streaming debut on Disney+ Hotstar. Released on the occasion of Ayudha Puja, the film's digital release comes after an impressive 50-day run in theatres, a milestone that is especially significant for a film of this scale.
Initially planned as a direct-to-streaming release, Vaazhai saw a change in strategy, opting for a theatrical release first. The decision proved to be a wise one, with the film surpassing box office expectations and emerging as one of the most successful Tamil films of the year. Vaazhai also made history as the first Tamil film produced by Disney+ Hotstar to have a theatrical run before its digital release.
Despite facing challenges from major star-driven films like Thalapathy Vijay’s The Greatest of All Time, Vaazhai held its ground at the box office, grossing over Rs 20 crore in Tamil Nadu and more than Rs 40 crore globally. The film's theatrical success is remarkable given its modest Rs 5 crore budget and lack of a star-studded cast.
The film’s sustained run in cinemas underscores Mari Selvaraj’s growing influence in Tamil cinema, proving that strong storytelling can triumph even without big names attached. The positive reception also reflects audiences’ growing appreciation for content-driven cinema, with Vaazhai resonating deeply due to its focus on social justice and the exploitation of marginalized communities.
Inspired by real-life events and Mari Selvaraj’s personal experiences, Vaazhai tackles the harsh realities of oppressed labourers in Tamil Nadu’s remote villages. Its gripping narrative and emotional depth have earned it both critical praise and commercial success.
