Actor Vijay Sethupathi seems to have had a profound experience watching the latest Tamil movie Vaazhai. Written and directed by Mari Selvaraj, the movie presents the ills of caste oppression through a child's point of view.
After watching Vaazhai, Sethupathi shared high praise for Mari and thanked him for bringing such a story to life on the big screen. He was visibly still reeling from the impact of the movie and struggled to find the right words to express his experience.
"I just saw Vaazhai, directed by Mari Selvaraj. Even now, I don't feel like the film is over. The politics of this film, the performances, and the settings have made me feel like I am part of the world. I am trapped in this film. My deep gratitude to Mari Selvaraj for making a movie like this and for documenting a life like this. We only read headlines in newspapers and move on with our lives. But he has shown the stories behind these headlines with such clarity. To know a life like this will help us raise questions about our own lives," he said.

Sethupathi isn't the first high-profile member of the Tamil film industry to be moved so deeply by Vaazhai. Earlier, filmmaker Bala was rendered speechless and overwhelmed after watching the movie in a special screening. The filmmakers shared a video of Bala holding hands with Mari and sitting in silence, processing the emotional impact of the movie.
Vaazhai opened in cinemas worldwide to glowing reviews from critics, further establishing Mari Selvaraj's reputation as one of the strongest contemporary voices in Tamil cinema.
